McPherson College Class of 2017 Sent Out With Hope During Commencement

McPherson College celebrated its 129th Commencement Ceremony on May 21st in Brown Auditorium. The graduates were presented with messages of wisdom, resiliency and hope from professors and peers.

Corey Long, senior class representative, welcomed the family and friends there to support the 126 students about to accept their diplomas. “When I came to college, I was thinking about myself and my future, but I’ve changed. I’m now thinking of us. I think we all are. We’ve laughed together, learned together and moved mountains together. I can’t wait to see what our family here will do in the world.”

All of the speakers encouraged the graduates to recognize the moment they were in and to take that out into the world. Rod Gieselman, professor of business, gave the homily and imparted his own worldly wisdom:

  • No matter what you own, someone always has something nicer, so practice appreciating what you have.
  • What was accomplished yesterday is water under the bridge. All the degrees and accolades earned are in the past. Your value is today.
  • And, there is always room for ice cream.

Dr. Ken Yohn, professor and chair of history and politics, gave the commencement address. “Tying Up Loose Ends” was a collection of thoughts tied together for the seniors. He began by asking the students to celebrate. “Take this one moment and lock it in. Take your hand and make a little fist pump. You did this.”

“Nobody graduates from college by accident,” Yohn told them. “Think about it – everyone here had reasons to quit over the past four years. All of those challenges to hold you back. You made those specific concrete choices, because you have this thing, this inspiration. One action in time, one moment, because you have this aspiration, you are here.”

Yohn touched on how college is a time for students to make mistakes, learn from their failures and take that resiliency out into the world.

Yohn concluded, “It’s about the nature of hope. Hope brought you to this point. Form your life with hope. When presented with anger, respond with compassion. That’s hope. When you fear, respond with love. That is hope. That is what I wish for you.”

MC Student Leaders Receive CHS Refinery Scholarship

CHS McPherson Refinery recently awarded $1,500 scholarships to McPherson College seniors Johanna Hoffman of Goessel, Kan., and Emily Warner of Valley Center, Kan. The annual award recognizes MC students who contribute to the campus and McPherson community through their leadership roles, studies, jobs, and volunteerism.

Amy Beckman, talent acquisition specialist at CHS, said it was important to their business to provide recognition and encouragement to these young local leaders.

“The CHS Refinery Leadership Award was created to recognize students that are demonstrating leadership in our community and the school,” Beckman said. “We try to encourage and foster that passion for service in order to develop leaders for our future.”

Hoffman, a communication major, has served in a number of leadership roles at McPherson College. She was a co-founder and leader of ‘Peacefully, Simply, Together’ a campus group that focuses on building and maintaining relationships, as well as participating in service together. She served as a peer mentor for two years for first-time freshmen on campus. For the last three years, she has served as the assistant to the director of Spiritual Life and Service and was recently recognized with the Outstanding Achievement in Ministry Award on campus.

Hoffman is looking to pursue a career in marketing and communication while continuing to serve in the community. “I am so thankful for CHS and this scholarship, as well as the leadership opportunities I have had at McPherson College. The experiences I’ve had while participating in service here have helped me learn how to be a more effective leader.”

Warner, a finance, management, and marketing major, has served as the vice president of the McPherson College business club, as an urban youth mentor at Kids Across America and as varsity volleyball captain. “I was the line of communication between coaches and players, and set expectations through leading by example,” said Warner.

“I am honored to be recognized for leadership by CHS,” she said.

Warner has already secured a position as a Credit Analyst at Koch Industries upon graduation.

Abbey Archer-Rierson, chief of staff at McPherson College is thankful for the recognition and continued commitment from CHS.

“These students truly embrace the ideals of the college’s mission of scholarship, participation and service. We are excited to see what the future holds for Johanna and Emily.

Undergraduate Researchers Present to Campus and Community

McPherson College held their annual Natural Science Research Forum on April 21, 2017. Around 75 students, faculty, staff, family and friends attended the event held in Melhorn Science Hall on the McPherson College Campus.

Natural Science majors spend their final two years of college researching, experimenting and analyzing their data for their senior projects. The capstone of this experience is the Forum, an event held since the early 1980’s where the students present their findings and answer questions from the audience about their research. These presentations make up 30% of their final grade in their NS475 Senior Research class. Their research is then published in The Cantaurus, a scientific journal for the college. Having published research as an undergraduate is rare and often sets McPherson College students apart from other graduate school applicants.

“The senior research forum is the culmination of a two-year process starting during the student’s junior year. Our department’s dedication to students learning science by doing real research makes for a unique experience that not many other undergraduates get as an integrated part of their major. This event is an excellent way to highlight our natural science seniors and showcase their hard work. It is always a proud moment, as a faculty member, to watch our students in this moment and see all of their hard work come to fruition,” said Dr. Dustin Wilgers, assistant professor of biology.

Students are encouraged to develop their own research according to their interests. Lucas Giesey, biochemistry major from Sheridan, Wyo., had surgery three times during his first two years of college due to a sports injury. He developed an interest in anesthesia, which led him to research the effects of the Corydalis plant as an anesthetic on mice. In his presentation, he also explained several of the downsides of working with mice and documenting how they slept.

Elyse Munganga, biology major from Topeka, Kan., used a more difficult subject base, his fellow students. His project studied the effects of caffeine on students’ ability to follow puzzles on short-term memory and memorizations. One of his biggest challenges was getting enough volunteer students to come for testing early in the morning.

Also presenting was Nathan Finch, biochemistry major from Lindsborg, Kan., who recently took first place in the annual Kansas Academy of Sciences meeting. This competition saw students from colleges and universities across Kansas presenting their research in a two-day forum. Finch won the undergraduate research competition with his presentation, “The Effect of pH on Gossypol Inhibition of Rabbit Muscle Lactate Dehydrogenase.”

“My research topic was important to me. However, experiencing the research process first hand has helped me interpret and access others’ research. That’s what matters,” said Finch.

A full list of the students who presented follows:
Alyssa Drury: The Prevalence of Antibiotic Resistance in Escherichia coli in relation to wastewater treatment plants
Sheryl Evans: The Effects of Condition on Leg Regeneration in the Wolf Spider Rabidosa punctulata

McPherson College Wins Highest Award at Graphic Design Competition for the Second Year Running

By Johanna Hoffman ’17, communication major

McPherson College students won eight of ten graphic design award categories at AIGA competition in Wichita on April 8, 2017.

AIGA, the professional association for design, is the largest membership organization promoting the advancement of design. The Wichita AIGA chapter hosts an annual Student Portfolio Forum, an event where college students can have their design portfolios reviewed by professionals in the industry, as well as network and participate in competition with college students from other schools.

During the competition, four McPherson College students won eight of the ten categories, including the highest honor, best overall portfolio, which was won by Jessie Neher, senior from Rochester, Minn. Neher was anxious leading up to the event, but is grateful she took the chance.

“I was very nervous to participate in AIGA because I’ve never entered a competition like this before. I found that participating in AIGA is really important, because you receive professional feedback and have the opportunity to gain multiple connections in the graphic design field.”

Corey Long, senior from McPherson, Kan. also took home two awards during the weekend. He attributes McPherson College’s success during AIGA to the work each participant put in leading up to the event.

“If you showcase your work ethic and present it well, that will be better overall and pushed further than talent alone. We all had the drive to stay up every night and critique each other at every corner, pushing each other to do better and be examples for each other.”

The most valuable part of the event for Long was meeting with professionals in the industry. The students had the opportunity to meet with around 30 professionals, including keynote speaker Leif Steiner, owner of creative agency Moxie Sozo in Denver, Colo.

“It is as important to go and talk to people as it is to compete. The most significant part of the weekend was getting our faces out there and being willing to connect with and meet professionals,” said Long.

Dee Erway-Sherwood, professor and program director of graphic design, was pleased with McPherson College’s representation during the weekend, as it reflects the hard work they put in during the year.

“Our MC design students worked very hard and put in a tremendous amount of time and effort in getting ready for the competition – and it paid off. It was a great event, and I am so very proud of their hard work and accomplishments. We have very talented students and exciting things going on with our Visual Arts program at McPherson College.”

There were 24 participants in the competition, many of whom came from larger state schools such as Fort Hays State University, Kansas State University, Kansas University, and Wichita State University.

McPherson College students who participated in the competition, and the awards they won, are as follows:
Jessie Neher, senior, Rochester, Minn., First place overall portfolio, best interactive design, best motion graphics
Channing Wall, senior, McPherson, Kan., Second place overall portfolio, best advertising
Corey Long, senior, McPherson, Kan., Best logo, best branding
Jayden Hilgers, sophomore, Wichita, Kan., Best photography
Nick Greenway, senior, Wichita, Kan.

McPherson Student Wins Top Place in State Research Competition

Nathan Finch, senior biochemistry major at McPherson College, took first place in the Kansas Academy of Sciences meeting in Hays, Kansas on Saturday April 8, 2017. Finch, a native of Lindsborg, won the undergraduate research competition with his presentation, “The Effect of pH on Gossypol Inhibition of Rabbit Muscle Lactate Dehydrogenase.”

Finch works as an EMT in McPherson and decided to go back to school to finish medical school prerequisites. Finch spent two years researching, developing and executing experiments as part of his senior capstone project at the college.

“My research topic was important to me. However, experiencing the research process first hand has helped me interpret and access others’ research. That’s what matters,” said Finch.

After graduating next month, Finch will start at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

Over 100 guests attended the conference with a majority of the students competing from the larger universities across the state. McPherson College sent eleven students from the Natural Sciences Department.

Dr. Allan Ayella, associate professor of biology co-authored the paper. “Nathan Finch’s win at the Kansas Academy of Science meeting is a testament both to his resolve as a hardworking, detail-oriented student and to the academic rigor in the Natural Science program at McPherson College. We strive for excellence in the sciences, and it is nice to get that recognition from time to time.”

‘For Colored Girls’ at McPherson College Gives Attention to Frequently Unheard American Voices

With a title like “for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf,” the upcoming play at McPherson College will clearly be anything but “easy.”

Jd. Bowman, associate professor of theatre, said challenging audiences was one of his most important reasons for selecting the landmark play by Tony Award-winning playwright Ntozake Shange.

“My hope is that members of our campus community and our audience discover the beauty of this piece,” he said.

The 1975 play will be showing at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2-4 in the college’s Mingenback Theatre. Reservations are required by contacting the theatre box office at 620-242-0444 or at [email protected].

Bowman said that the play consists of a series of inter-connected storytelling poems told by women who are identified only by the color of the rainbow they are dressed in.

It provides a glimpse into what it meant to be an African-American in the United States in the 1970s, but has grown to reflect many voices in America that are silent or unspoken.

Even though most of the local audience is Caucasian, Bowman said that just makes this play’s message even more important.

“That is all the more reason why this piece should be produced here – because we need to hear voices and stories that are different than our own,” he said. “When we look into a social mirror, we do best if that reflection is not what we expect.”

However, Bowman expects people in minority and majority populations alike to find connection to the play.

“One of my favorite poems starts with, ‘Somebody almost walked off with all of my stuff,’” Bowman said. “In the poem, a woman is realizing that gave so much of herself to a relationship that she almost let them run away with her identity. I can relate to that story and many more in this piece.”

Tickets to all shows cost $5 for adults and $3.50 for children ages high school and younger as well as seniors.

Cast for the show is: Whitney Murray, junior, Kansas City, Kan.; Nora Grosbach, junior, Evergreen, Colo.; Aysia Pryor, sophomore, Wichita, Kan.; Miaya Sample, freshman, Baytown, Texas; and guest alumna artists – Tracey Hughes ’91, Kansas City, Mo.; Colleen Gustafson ’06, McPherson, Kan.; and Kenyatta Harden ’13, McPherson, Kan.

Crew for the show includes: Elizabeth Thornton, freshman, Karval, Colo. (stage manager); Erin Fralick, junior, New Palestine, Ind. (lights); and Nancy Dorrell, freshman, Newton, Kan. (sound).

McPherson College Holds Second Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition

Sometimes it’s recognition from a stranger that means the most.

That’s the idea behind the second annual McPherson College Juried Student Art Exhibition, on display now through Feb. 5 in Friendship Hall on the campus of McPherson College. It will conclude with a reception for the student artists on that date from 2 to 3:30 p.m., and the public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Wayne Conyers, professor of art, said that before last year, the works in the student exhibition were selected by the faculty. Now, however, the college brings in an outside juror to name the student award winners. Conyers said it created a more realistic experience of trying to get into real-world show.

“When they do this, it’s like a professional exhibition,” he said. “They’ve got to apply. They’ve got to prepare.”

This year the exhibition includes 78 works by students in media as diverse as ceramics, graphic design, paint, and even fabrics.

The juror this year is Ron Michael, director of the Birger Sandzén Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kan. He named the best of show winners as well as 14 “Merit Award” recipients from among the works on display.

“We’ve realized that part of assessment of what we’re doing is having outsiders come in and evaluate,” Conyers said.

The “Best of Show: Studio winner” was Italia Venegas, freshman, Shawnee Mission, Kan.; and the “Best of Show: Graphic Design” recipient was Jaden Hilgers, sophomore, Wichita, Kan.

The other MC students accepted for the exhibition are: Chloe Cloud, sophomore, Wichita, Kan.; Alley Domar, senior, McPherson, Kan.; Monica Ewy, senior, McPherson, Kan.; Micah Gilbert, freshman, Elkhart, Ind.; Nora Grosbach, junior, Evergreen, Colo.; Joshua Hall, senior, Tonganoxie, Kan.; Jennifer Jacobitz, sophomore, Muskegon, Mich.; Lisa Koehn, senior, Galva, Kan.; Lillian Oeding, freshman, Wichita, Kan.; Ian Rhoten, sophomore, Wichita, Kan.; Miguel Luna Sanchez, senior, Salinas, Calif.; Logan Schrag, junior, McPherson, Kan.; Amber Shuey, freshman, Wichita, Kan.; Sarah Tajchman, freshman, Marion, Kan.; Brenda Tejero, senior, Aurora, Colo.; Channing Wall, senior, McPherson, Kan.; Madison Whaley, junior, McPherson, Kan.; and Carol Zerger of McPherson, Kan.

Lindsborg, Salina Students Receive Scholarships to Participate With McPherson College Bands

McPherson College is pleased to announce the signings of two fantastic incoming players for fall 2017 – Myriah Webster resident of Lindsborg, Kan., and Marquette native; and Bailey Miller of Salina, Kan.

Webster has committed to play baritone saxophone and Miller has signed to play clarinet for McPherson College, with both receiving scholarships to participate in the college’s bands.

Webster will be pursuing a major in biology on a pre-veterinary track. A saxophone player since fifth grade with two aunts who also played, she has a strong background in both the alto and baritone varieties of the saxophone. Her honors include District Jazz Band her junior year and District Concert Band her senior year.

Miller is planning to enter the behavioral sciences program at MC with an eye toward becoming a social worker, although a long-standing interest in interior design may also shape her studies. She has earned a spot in District Honor Band all four years of high school and was either first or second chair in three of those four years. She also has played in the Salina Youth Symphony for five years.

Her start in band goes back to a spur-of-the-moment decision to play clarinet in the fifth grade.

“I’m really glad I did,” Miller said. “I think everyone should take band at least once.”

Webster said that because MC seeks out instrumentalists for scholarships who are both music majors as well as students who are outside of that major, it gives her a great opportunity to pursue diverse interests.

Even beyond McPherson College and graduate school, Webster said she plans to continue playing.

“I want to continue pursuing what I do best,” she said, “Maybe playing in some small-town orchestras while I’m in vet school and maybe playing in it after vet school.”

Webster said that what most appealed to her about McPherson College was how the MC bands have grown in recent years. Kyle Hopkins, associate professor of music and director of bands, took the program from just eight members four years ago to 57 members this semester.

“I think how he’s built the program interested me,” Webster said. “They’re not diminishing, they’re growing. That’s the number-one aspect that drew me.”

Miller said a number of factors drew her to MC – her band scholarship, the personal attention available at a smaller college, and the strong emphasis the college places on the arts in general. That emphasis, in particular, Miller said has strong benefits for mental health and in developing well-rounded, creative people.

“It just creates a whole new appreciation for music and the way it has changed through the years,” she said. “By recognizing the past, we can appreciate the present and also the future of what the arts will bring.”

Hopkins said Webster and Miller represent the high caliber of band students the college is now able to recruit as a result of a robust and growing program – which now supports both a concert band and a jazz band.

“Students such as Myriah and Bailey represent the ‘cream of the crop,’” Hopkins said. “I’m excited we will be welcoming them to McPherson College next year and benefitting from their impressive musical abilities.”
